I was commissioned by the Bernard van Leer Foundation to produce a photoessay about what life is like as a midwife in a rural Ugandan health centre. I chose the Kanyatsi H/C I, located on the border between Uganda and DR Congo. It's a unique site, which provides healthcare to a very rural, mountainous catchment area where borders are just lines on a piece of paper. The midwives, who work in a rotation of two, are on call 24/7 and must be almost totally self-sufficient. They are some of the most admirable, positive and caring people I have ever been lucky to photograph.
